If you spend a lot of time on your bike, you run a good chance of being struck by a car. In fact, statistics show that over 3000 people were seriously injured in bike versus car accidents in 2015 alone. The same statistics show that an additional 100 were killed in bike versus car accidents. Before you take off on your bike, make sure you know what to do if you're struck by a car. Knowing what to do can help you avoid further injuries, and recover properly.

Get to Safety if Possible

If you're struck by a car while riding your bike, chances are good that you were in the street. If you're still in the street after the accident, you want to move to the side of the road, if possible. Remaining on the road could lead to further injuries, especially if another motorist doesn't see you, and strikes you while you're lying there. If your injuries allow it, move yourself to the side of the road and wait for help. If your injuries won't allow you to move, make sure you're visible to passing motorists.

Call for Emergency Assistance

If you're able to, call for emergency assistance. If you're unable to, or you've lost your phone in the accident, have someone else on the scene make the call. You're going to need paramedics to look over your injuries. You're going to need law enforcement to take an accident report. This part is particularly important in bike versus car accidents. You never know when the motorist is going to try and blame you for the accident or leave the scene altogether. Once you call for emergency services, ask witnesses to remain on the scene with you. They'll need to give a statement, which will help your case.

Take the Ride in the Ambulance

If you've been struck by a car, don't pass on the ambulance ride, even if you think you feel fine. You never know what type of hidden injuries you could be suffering from. Your body is no match for a motor vehicle. Let the paramedics transport you to the hospital so that doctors can assess your injuries.

Talk to an Attorney

If your bike ride results in a car accident, you're going to need legal representation, especially if you want to receive the compensation and treatment you're entitled to. When you go in for your appointment, be sure to bring your medical records, and the accident report with you. These documents will help your personal injury attorney get things going for you.
